In a former hotel I met a Somali couple who fled to Germany. Nuur (27) his wife Nasteha (25) and their daugther Nasra (4) live together on 19 square meters. The double bed is taking most of the space.
Nasra was born in Somalia and came to Germany with her mother two years after Nuur. He had to flee beforehand because working as a journalist he was especially endangered.
Nuur talked about journalism in a country where radical groups like al-Shabab are widely present. Loosely translated quote: "They don't like us journalists very much." Two of his colleagues were killed in terror attacks.
As Somalia not being considered a so called "safe country of origin", they are after several bureaucratic hurdles, accepted to stay by the German authorities. Nasteha plans on working in the social sector. Nuur sees his lack of perfect German skills as a problem for continuing his work as a journalist. He thinks about embarking on a career as a computer scientist.
